Braemar Castle Watercolour

The watercolour is simply painted to show the strategic position of the castle even in winter. The backdrop was painted with light washes to indicate snow and an insipid sky that makes it stand out

Some History

The castle was burned out by John Farquharson in 1689.

Given its position, the five-storey L shaped castle was leased to the Government, who reinstated it as a garrison house. They built a star-shaped curtain wall after the 1745 Jacobite Uprising.

The Castle was returned to private hands in 1831 eventually became the seat of the Farquharson Clan until the construction of Invercauld House.

The painting evidences the historic need for Braemar Castle at that place.

The Castle was leased to the Community in 2006 and is now open to the public.
