Brief Crovie Village History

Crovie was originally established by crofters driven off their land in favour of sheep. They took to fishing and used that as the only means of access to their village.

Crovie is unique. As best known there is nowhere else in mainland Britain where motor vehicles cannot be used. The shelf on which the village is perched is so narrow it has only room for a row of cottages and the footpath in front of them.

Only a few feet from the cottages is the drop to the rocky foreshore and the sea.

With the general downturn in fishing and the Great Storm of 1953 that badly damaged the village, its residents moved out.

The revival of Crovie has been mainly as holiday lets and those wishing total seclusion.

The village that stands today is a magical attraction for artists and tourists alike.

Its sad story is now history.

The little houses nestled along the shoreline feel so peaceful. I can almost hear the waves lapping against the seawall. It’s the sort of place you’d visit to escape the hustle and breathe salty air.
