The Watercolour

This Castle is a gem set within a village location unique to the area that contains a plethora of colours and construction as a must for the artist. The natural light changes many times to display colours ranging from browns to greys as a challenge and best painted as background washes and highlighted specific points.

Some History

The original building is a 16th century L shaped tower on three storeys known to have existed by 1592 having corbelled out turret bartizans and corbelled out stair built within the re-entrant angle. There are a number of gunloops throughout. The basement is vaulted, the main stair rises to first floor and the remaining levels reached by a stair in the re-entrained turret. There was a stone and harled extension added in the 17th century to make the castle a T plan structure.

The castle was constructed by Thomas Menzies of Dunn, Provost of Aberdeen, and by marriage transferred to the Earls of Seafield, thereafter used as a school. It has been restored.

  1. Millie

Fordyce Castle’s unique architecture stands out beautifully against the soft sky. There’s something endearing about the slightly wonky lines. It feels like a real place with a story rather than a postcard.
