Welcome to My Newsletter!
As the days grow shorter and the Scottish landscape transforms with rich, golden tones, we find ourselves in the season of harvest—what the poets call “mellow fruitfulness.” Autumn has a unique way of inspiring reflection and celebration of both nature and artistry, and this October has been particularly fruitful here in northeast Scotland. In keeping with the season’s spirit, I’m thrilled to share with you two pieces that showcase Aberdeen’s heritage, both in architecture and in tribute to one of Scotland’s most heroes.

First, I invite you to take a closer look at my watercolour of the iconic Royal Insurance Building, located on the corner of Union and Huntly Streets. This historic structure, completed in the early 1900s and designed by local architect George Bennett Mitchell, stands as one of Aberdeen’s finest examples of granite architecture. Built in the Venetian style with Renaissance details, the building showcases skilled craftsmanship and locally sourced granite, which truly anchors it in the character of the city. My watercolour of this landmark brings out the unique architectural details: from the banded courses at the ground level to the giant Ionic columns and the exquisite octagonal cupola crowning the structure. Capturing these elements required careful drafting and inking, followed by layers of watercolour to bring out the play of light on granite—a tribute to the artistry of Aberdeen’s builders.
I’m excited to introduce ‘Robert the Bruce: Tribute in Watercolour’ as a painting in my series of historical statues in Aberdeen. This series features some of Scotland’s most iconic figures, and this particular piece captures the grandeur of Robert the Bruce. The series also includes William Wallace and a depiction of Robert Burns. Each painting in this series is a celebration of Scotland’s rich heritage, and I’m delighted to share my latest addition with you
