Dunnottar Castle a Brief History
Dunnottar was originally an early middle age castle under various occupants before written history.
The existing buildings form a ruined medieval fortress largely built around the 15th and 16th centuries for the Keith family.
The surrounding defences are formed by the vertical stone cliffs rising above the sea that took time to paint given their age and complexity.
The Honours of Scotland were housed there during the Cromwellian period and smuggled out when the Castle went under siege.
Following the 1715 Jacobite Uprising Dunnottar Castle was confiscated from the Keiths following their support for that cause.
It was bought, stripped and fell into disrepair thereafter.
The Castle was bought by the Pearson Family after 1919. Countess Cowdery commenced a minimal restoration after that and is now open to the public.

Jillian –
This painting was a wonderful gift from a friend.
Dunnottar Castle is one of my favourite places. My husband and I have visited it three times and in different seasons, so we see something different on each visit. The most recent visit was in November, with a low sun stirring and exposing stonework with such clarity.
John’s incredible talent has demonstrated the richness and depths of the shades of the stone, the huge sky and the different buildings within the castle site.
We recognised where John captured the painting. The painting brings back many happy memories. The gift of this painting has made my Christmas.
