A quiet morning in Aberdeenshire

The lawns are soft with spring colour, the sky a calm drift of cloud, and Leith Hall sits poisedโ€”crow-stepped gables, turreted corners and slate roofs catching the soft Scottish light. From across the field, the house feels both stately and welcoming, a place that has gathered stories for centuries.

Why I painted Leith Hall

Leith Hall has that rare balance of grandeur and gentleness. I was drawn to the rhythm of its chimneys and the way the pine trees cradle the building on the right. I wanted to capture the hush you feel as you approachโ€”footsteps on gravel, a door that has opened to many livesโ€”so the painting invites you to pause, breathe, and step closer.

Artistic analysis: light, colour and composition

The palette leans to cool greys and slate blues for the harled walls and roof, warmed with small touches of ochre on the chimneys. Broad greens sweep the foreground, guiding your eye to the entrance, while the darker evergreens on the right frame the hall and add depth.

A gentle three-quarter perspective allows the faรงade to unfold: windows in crisp alignment, turrets like quiet sentinels. The clouded sky brings diffused lightโ€”soft shadows across grass and stoneโ€”so texture, not glare, shapes the mood. Focal points are deliberate: the front doorway, the run of chimneys, and the contrast between masonry and tree line. The low scatter of stones at the front edge anchors the scene, lending a sense of place and scale.

A house of stories

Leith Hall stands near Kennethmont in Aberdeenshire. Its earliest wing dates from 1650 and the house grew over the next two centuries with east, south and west additions. Home to the Leith-Hay family for around 300 years, it became a Red Cross hospital during the First World War and was later gifted to the National Trust for Scotland in 1945. Today, its gardens and estate welcome visitors through the seasons. WikipediaUndiscovered ScotlandNational Trust for Scotland

What this painting hopes to evoke

I aimed for a stillness that suits the buildingโ€™s long memoryโ€”a quiet, steady light; thoughtful detail without fuss. I wanted viewers to feel that blend of history and landscape: the comfort of trees, the dignity of stone, and the sense that time moves slowly here.
