From the moment I started this watercolour from the southern shore, I aimed to portray Loch Muick’s translucent calm. I began with a smooth watercolour wash across the loch’s surface, carefully lifting white gouache highlights to recreate the way sunlight danced on the glassy waters. For the hillsides, I layered sponging techniques to blend rich greens of the slopes with vivid purple heather, achieving seamless transitions and a natural depth. Above it all, I painted the sky using a graduated wet-on-wet wash, allowing drift clouds to form organically. Subtle back-runs and soft shafts of sunlight were added to enhance the atmospheric mood and bring a sense of movement.
Seasonal Contrast: Summer vs Winter
In 2020, I painted Loch Muick under a late winter setting, capturing its frost-kissed beauty with a cool palette of muted blues and greys. That winter scene conveyed a quiet, introspective mood, with pen-and-ink details emphasising frost on rocks and the stark contours of snow-draped mountains. In “Summer Splendour”, the same pathway that once led through icy stillness now guides the viewer amid warm hues and soft lighting. While the winter version spoke of solitude and reflection, this summer painting radiates warmth and gentle tranquillity, yet both pieces share the same enduring spirit of the landscape.
