Lochnagar: An Impressive Mountain in Royal Deeside (Original)
The vast mountain of Lochnagar has been a personal challenge to capture in a painting since I first climbed it in 1963.
The challenge was overcome in 2022 when a friend presented me with a photograph of Lochnagar he had recently taken when he was hillwalking.

Lochnagar
Lochnagar is a vast and impressive mountain adjacent to Loch Muick and located west of Aberdeen on the Balmoral Royal Deeside Estate. It has an elevation of 1155 metres.
A friend climbed it during a clear May day and agreed to let me paint the subject from a photograph he had sent me.
Its principal feature is a northeast-facing corrie, around which most of the subsidiary tops, the main peak stands, and a small loch at the base.
The north-facing watercolour shows the main corrie with โBlack Spoutโ, the encompassed loch below, then on to Meall Coire na Saobhaidhe behind and eventually the far distance of Royal Deeside.
The painting has numerous colour finishes including the sky, solid rock, scree slopes, boulder beds and moss and lichen fields.
The water surfaces were challenging to distinguish in synergy with each other as washes to present the mass of the subject in the painting. Colours were generally subdued to present the mood and remoteness of the area.
The watercolour shows Lochnagar in its autumn splendour, just before a wild snowstorm gave it a jacket of snow that will endure until springtime. A worthy subject for a painting.

Lochnagar dominates the landscape here. The strong lines and deep shadows show off its imposing presence, yet the foreground is soft and inviting. It’s a lovely balance of drama and calm.
