Sunlit Courtyard at Tolquhon Castle, Aberdeenshire โ€“ A Watercolour Journey

Capturing a Moment

I first wandered into Tolquhon Castle on a bright summer morning, camera in hand, hoping to catch a glimpse of its storied walls. Tucked away on a quiet road at Tarves, this 15thโ€‘century gem immediately captivated me. Through a ruined kitchen window, I saw the round stairwell crowned by its little caphouse, framed against mossโ€‘clad granite and bathed in golden sunlight. It was a moment I simply had to paint.

A Labour of Love

Over three tranquil mornings, I sketched every arch and crumbling stone to nail the proportions, then refined the composition with ink. Each layer of wash and every careful line was born of a desire to honour the castleโ€™s timeless presence.

Technique and Palette

  • Wetโ€‘onโ€‘wet washes formed a pale French Ultramarine sky that floats above the ramparts.
  • Diluted Sepia and Yellow Ochre evoke sunโ€‘warmed walls, deepened with Lamp Black in the shadows, and brightened with Titanium White for subtle highlights.
  • Sap Green hints at climbing moss and ageโ€‘worn decay.
  • Ink details anchor the loose washes, defining the caphouse, stairwell, and stonework with precision.

Bringing Light and Shadow to Life

I deliberately contrasted broad, fluid strokes in the sky with tighter, more methodical brushwork on the granite. By lifting pigment in the midโ€‘tones, I created glints of light that mirror the way real stone catches the sun. The result is a dynamic rhythm that guides your eye from the open air above into the intimate enclosure of the courtyard.

Echoes of History

Tolquhonโ€™s walls carry centuries of stories. Built by the Prestons in the 1400s and completed by the Forbes family, it passed to the Farquhars before serving as a Gordon farmhouse in the 18th century. Abandoned in the 19th century, its weathered ruins now stand under the care of Historic Scotlandโ€”an enduring testament to Scotlandโ€™s rich past.

Print Editions

This original watercolour (12โ€ฏร—โ€ฏ16โ€ฏinches on 300โ€ฏgram Bockingford NOT paper) is also offered as a limitedโ€‘edition print in A3, A4 or A6 formatsโ€”each mounted and protected in a clear cellophane sleeve.

Reflection

Painting โ€œSunlit Courtyard at Tolquhon Castleโ€ has been a journey through light, texture, and history. I hope this watercolour invites you into its tranquil embrace and kindles your own appreciation for Scotlandโ€™s architectural heritage.
