Rugged Buchan Coastline (Original)
£300.00
The Rugged Buchan coastline around Cruden Bay is worthy of a watercolour painting.
The sea was calm. The light was strong. The sandy foreshore contrasts with the rock strata.
The sandy shore makes way for rugged cliffs a few miles north where the coastline is carved out by the North Sea.

Low tide, long memories
The sea has stepped back and left a quiet map of silver pools and slick, greened stone. The sky is pale; the horizon breathes. This is Buchan when the North Sea whispers rather than roars.
Why I painted this scene
Iโm drawn to the honest architecture of this shoreโledges, skerries and channels worn by centuries of tide. On this day the light was gentle and even, perfect for showing how the water threads between rocks. I wanted to capture that unshowy beauty: calm, resilient, unmistakably North-East.
In the studio: how the watercolour was built
This is an original, hand-painted watercolour. I kept the palette restrainedโsea greys, slate blues and mossy greensโlayered in thin glazes so the paperโs brightness becomes the light on the water. Harder edges and drybrush in the foreground describe the chiselled texture of stone; softer, cooler washes in the distance suggest salt haze.
Compositionally, the eye enters at the lower right where a slow swirl of ripples forms a natural pathway. Angular rock planes then step you through the middle ground before the shapes flatten toward the horizon, letting space and stillness take over.
Mood, light and focal points
The mood is contemplative rather than dramatic. Light sits on the water as a soft sheen, not a blaze. The main focal points are the broken rock ribs and the pale channels between themโquiet contrasts that invite you to wander rather than rush.
Place and story
Buchanโs coastline, on Aberdeenshireโs north-east shoulder, is known for its rugged platforms, skerries and sea cavesโland that asks you to watch the tide. Fishing, lighthouses and cliff-top landmarks have long shaped daily life here. Iโve tried to let that heritage show through: a landscape weathered by work and weather, content in its own company.
For collectors of the original
Original watercolours offer a depth and delicacy that reproductions canโt quite echoโthe sparkle of untouched paper, the granulation in the rocks, the small decisions in every edge. If this quiet piece speaks to you, I hope it finds a good home.

Patrick –
Itโs got a lovely quietness about it. The soft tones and scattered rocks give a real sense of stillness, like a peaceful moment before the tide shifts again. You can almost hear the gentle lap of the water.
