The Cottown of Balgownie Cottages watercolour is a standard view many artists use.

However, in the autumn sun, I found the textures of the trees, the tones of light, the building materials and the slope of the road together with the soft colours provide a unique tranquillity to this watercolour.

Some History

A medieval town existed and attached to Old Machar Cathedral called Old Aberdeen spread over the 13th century Brig O’ Balgownie and eastward along the River Don.

The result is a row of cottages that may not have been the original but stands now on that eastward road and named as Cottown of Balgownie.

The quaintness of the area and these upgraded buildings give a “chocolate box” feel that artists and photographers find endearing.

It was a pleasure to paint.

This charming scene of stone cottages with leafy gardens makes me want to pack my bags and move to the countryside. The artist’s attention to detail and warm colours give it such a homely, welcoming feel.
