Some Craigievar Castle History

The castle was built by the Mortimer family around 1625.  It was sold to William Forbes known as “Danzig Willie” who completed the work in 1626.

The castle has an L plan shape with a square tower and walls forming a courtyard. The courtyard walls were part demolished leaving one corner tower and wall existing as seen on the painting.

Craigievar Castle remains almost complete internally as originally built with its Yett gate. The external walls have been reharled in the pink colour as originally constructed and again shown as painted.

The Castle was donated to the National Trust For Scotland in 1963.

I love how this castle looks like something straight from a fairy tale. The soft tones and quirky turrets make it feel whimsical rather than intimidating. It would be lovely to explore those gardens on a sunny day. It makes me reminisce about childhood adventures in historic places.
