A Castle Steeped in History

Delgatie Castle, built around 1049, stands as a testament to Scotland’s rich and layered history. For over 650 years, it has been predominantly in the hands of the Hay family, evolving through time. Rebuilt in the 16th century and expanded in 1743 with the addition of the chapel and dovecote, it has weathered both natural decay and historical upheaval. By the early 20th century, however, the Castle had fallen into disrepair, plagued by dry rot and a partially collapsed roof. It was only thanks to the dedication of Captain Hay, following the Second World War, that the Castle was restored to its liveable condition, preserving its legacy for future generations.

The Subtle Beauty of Delgatie Castle

While many castles on Scotland’s Castle Trail boast dramatic architectural features, Delgatie Castle offers a different kind of appeal. Its unassuming presence and steadfast mass exude a quiet strength. It might lack the flamboyance of its counterparts, but its charm lies in this very simplicity. This understated elegance was what drew me to paint the Castle, and I sought to capture its soft, stoic character through the medium of watercolour.

The Inspiration Behind the Artwork

Painting Delgatie Castle was both a challenge and a joy. The Castle’s subdued features may initially appear bland, but as I observed it closely, I found a unique allure in its sheer scale and the harmony it shares with its surroundings. My aim in this painting was to highlight this subtle beauty, allowing the watercolour’s soft washes and delicate hues to showcase its timeless appeal. The Castle’s position against a backdrop of dynamic skies provided the perfect setting for this work.

A Hub for Artistic Creativity

Delgatie Castle is not only a historical landmark but also a vibrant centre for creativity. Each year, during the North East Open Studios exhibition, it becomes a space where artists can showcase their work. Being part of this artistic tradition has been a privilege, and this watercolour is my contribution to celebrating Delgatie Castle as a source of inspiration for many.
