Dunnottar Entrance Watercolour
Some History
This 15th century entrance is significant simply because of the exceptional stonework construction built into the contours of the hillside. It shows an impression of defence that would have been difficult to overwhelm.
The layout provides defence lines at the main entrance initially against arrows and swords and then providing gunloops with the advent of artillery and muskets.

The focus on the entrance gives this painting a mysterious quality, like you’re about to step back in time. I appreciate how the surrounding greenery frames the stone arch and invites you in.
