Fyvie Castle was an exceptional subject to paint. The details show well with the paint washes behind. The colours set off the structure.

Fyvie Castle Watercolour

Fyvie Castle watercolour was an exceptional subject to paint. The size of the castle required sketching the whole in smaller sections to catch all details and ensure the vertical lines were in proportion along the elevation.

Further horizontal lines also set the five storeys in synergy. The watercolour washes on the walls change colour in the various areas and the addition of washed in dirt gives character to the whole. The sky trees and green lawns provide a circular background to enhance the main painting.

Brief History

Fyvie Castle tower was originally constructed around the 13th century as a royal stronghold. The whole was surrounded by defence walls.

Thereafter three outer courtyard walls were removed and five families added their own extensions over the centuries.

The result is one of the largest and most magnificent Z plan castles in Scotland and is a favourite for weddings and photographs.

The Leith family sold Fyvie Castle to the National Trust for Scotland in 1982.

  1. Rosie

This view of Fyvie Castle is grand yet approachable. I like the way the artist has softened the stone with warm colours and greenery. It feels like a real place rather than a museum piece.
