Glen Tanar: A Peaceful Corner of Aberdeenshire
Explore the tranquillity of Glen Tanar, a beautiful glen located in Aberdeenshire. This watercolour painting captures a peaceful scene near the River Dee, reflecting the natural charm of this Scottish landscape.
Glen Tanar has a rich history, once forming part of the Marquis of Huntly’s lands. Over the years, it changed hands, but has always been a cherished part of Aberdeenshire’s heritage.
The Painting
I created this watercolour painting as a commission for a dear friend and his wife. It depicts a tranquil pool on the Water of Tanar, a spot that holds cherished memories for them and their family. The diverse array of tree species in the background adds depth and texture to the scene, capturing the stillness of the water and the gentle cascade of a nearby waterfall.
For this piece, I used a palette of rich ochre, raw sienna, deep brown, cobalt blue, and cadmium yellow to evoke a warm, inviting atmosphere. The painting captures the essence of late summer, with a soothing balm in the air and the subtle sounds of pheasants and capercaillies in the background. It’s a quiet moment, just before the excitement of the deer rut begins, encapsulating the natural beauty of Glen Tanar.

Harry –
The sweep of Glen Tanar feels so expansive. Rolling hills and tall pines lead your eye deep into the painting. It reminds me of long hikes where you hardly meet another soul.
