Potarch Bridge – Capturing Tranquillity in Paint

When I first laid eyes on Potarch Bridge, I was struck by its timeless beauty and sense of calm. Spanning the gentle flow of the River Dee in Aberdeenshire, this historic landmark felt like a bridge between nature and history, and I knew I had to capture it on paper.

A Bridge with a Story

Designed by the famous engineer Thomas Telford in the early 19th century, Potarch Bridge has stood strong for over two centuries. Its granite arches blend seamlessly into the rugged Scottish landscape, complementing the river it crosses rather than overpowering it. I wanted to honour that harmony in this painting – the bridge as a quiet focal point, surrounded by the rich greens of the trees and the shimmering blues of the Dee.

The River’s Magic

For me, the river itself was just as important as the bridge. The way the sunlight dances on the water, creating soft ripples of aquamarine and silver, gives the scene a life of its own. The rocks that dot the riverbed seem to whisper stories of time passed, while the trees, heavy with summer foliage, frame the bridge perfectly. I wanted you, as the viewer, to feel the same sense of peace I felt standing on the riverbank, listening to the soft babble of water and the rustle of leaves in the breeze.

A Connection to Place

Potarch Bridge is more than just a landmark – it’s a place of reflection, both for me as an artist and for those who visit it. There’s something about the stillness here that makes the world feel a little slower, a little softer. I’ve tried to bring that atmosphere to life in this painting, using delicate brushwork to capture the light, the texture of the rocks, and the bridge’s solid yet graceful form.

This piece is my way of sharing the beauty and tranquillity of Potarch Bridge with you. Whether you’ve walked its paths, fished its waters, or simply dreamt of the Scottish Highlands, I hope this painting transports you to a quiet afternoon by the River Dee – a place where history, nature, and serenity meet.
