Capturing the Royal Insurance Building in Aberdeen
When I set out to paint the Royal Insurance Building on Union Street in Aberdeen, my goal was to bring out the architectural details that make this structure so iconic. Completed around 1910 by Aberdeen architect George Bennett Mitchell, this historic building represents the city’s unique character and legacy as the “Granite City.” Through my painting, I hoped to convey both the strength and elegance of this Aberdeen landmark.
Balancing Light and Shade in Granite Architecture
In creating this watercolour painting, I carefully balanced light and shade to capture the charm of the Royal Insurance Building’s granite facade. Soft grey tones, layered meticulously, provide depth to the stonework, while subtle shading brings out the intricate details of Ionic columns and pedimented windows. I used pen and ink to define the architectural elements, such as arched doorways and window frames, ensuring these features stand out while harmonising with the building’s overall solidity.
To reflect Aberdeen’s often overcast skies, I applied a light wash of blue and grey, contrasting gently with the building’s structured form. Loose, stippled brushstrokes on the cobbled street add texture and ground the building within its Union Street setting. By focusing on light, texture, and precise detail, I aimed to evoke a sense of history and permanence.
Aberdeen’s Architectural Heritage and the Granite City
Aberdeen’s granite buildings are celebrated for their durability and beauty, and the Royal Insurance Building is a fine example. Located on Union Street, the city’s architectural hub, this building reflects early 20th-century Renaissance influences, with design elements intended to convey strength and reliability. The choice of granite not only highlights Aberdeen’s architectural heritage but also reflects the city’s identity as the “Granite City.”
Iconic Design Features of the Royal Insurance Building
The building’s octagonal cupola, framed by Ionic columns and capped with a stone dome, drew my eye immediately. This distinctive feature gives the structure a memorable silhouette, enhancing its visibility within Aberdeen’s historic landscape. The pedimented windows and grand columns along the facade create a timeless appeal—qualities that insurance companies sought to project in their buildings, embodying reliability and stability.
The Experience of Painting Aberdeen’s Royal Insurance Building
Painting this building allowed me to connect deeply with Aberdeen’s architectural past. Each historic building tells a story not only of its design but of the city’s growth and identity. Through this piece, I hoped to highlight the craftsmanship that went into creating this remarkable structure and bring a sense of Aberdeen’s history to life on paper.
Preserving Aberdeen’s Heritage Through Art
Painting the Royal Insurance Building was more than capturing its physical form—it was about preserving a piece of Aberdeen’s legacy. I feel honoured to contribute to the city’s architectural narrative and share the beauty of this iconic building with a wider audience.
