Harbour Street Crail Watercolour

This painting highlights:

  • the original stonework,
  • washed rendering
  • period roof tiles
  • fronted by stone slab pavements
  • with both tarred and cobbled streets

By using washes painted against each other the viewer’s eye is drawn to each part of the painting.

Brief History

Crail was recorded in 1148 AD to have a number of corrupted names including Cherel and Karel.

Mary of Guise and John Knox were visitors.

Crail was built around the harbour which was completed around 1583. The village became a centre for the fishing industry and its buildings attract many photographers and artists.

This busy little street by the harbour has so much character. I love the colourful houses and cobbles. It captures that slightly scruffy charm of fishing villages where life revolves around the tide.
