Slains Castle is an unusual watercolour. The building is relatively unimpressive standing in a flat bland landscape. So, the watercolour focuses on some of the more interesting and worthy features. John, the artist, has used Pen and Ink outlining to bring out the detail.

Slains Castle Background

Slains Castle stands on the edge of precipitous cliffs above the sea. The Hay family began construction during the 16th century. Extensive alterations occurred in 1664. The castle was given a granite facing in 1836. After the sale in 1925, the castle roof was removed to avoid paying taxes. It remains in that condition.

Bram Stoker author stayed near Cruden Bay Hotel. It was he who principally made Slains Castle famous by using its dilapidated structure as his inspiration for the setting for the tale of Count Dracula.

  1. Vincent

Looking at Slains Castle from this angle really shows its dramatic position on the cliffs. The unusual perspective adds a sense of intrigue, as if you’re sneaking a peek at a ruin from afar.
