Iona Abbey
Price range: £10.00 through £40.00
Iona Abbey is on the island of Iona, just off the Isle of Mull on the West Coast of Scotland.
It is one of the oldest Christian religious centres in Western Europe.
I also have a more detailed painting of the abbey building.
Iona Watercolour
The lack of structures within that area makes the Abbey of Iona such a jewel to paint. The washes over the picture producing the landscape of the island, water behind, and distant hills of Mull all had to be light in order to make the painting of the Abbey Buildings stand out to produce the effect of importance and tranquillity that the Abbey instills.
Some History
In its own right, Iona means little in island terms within the Inner Hebrides but it houses the Abbey of Iona where St Columba first brought Celtic Christianity to Scotland in 563AD.
Over the centuries, and continual attacks by raiders, left the Abbey largely in disrepair. In 1980, the Hugh Fraser Foundation gifted much of the island to the National Trust for Scotland and they in turn allowed the Abbey to be owned by the Iona Cathedral Trust who has carried out a reconstruction of the buildings as seen today.
