Old Birdham Mill and tidal pond at Birdham Sussex has been a desirable anchorage for centuries. The mill is timber in construction and always an appealing scene for artists.

Old Birdham Mill: Watercolour
A detailed sketch had to be drawn initially to show buildings and areas reducing in size to give depth of field. Pencil rather than pen and ink was used in this case to keep all rear scenery as a background subject in themselves.
The background trees buildings and the pond have been given mild washes.
This allows the mill structure and colours to stand out. The walkway to the front leads the eye back to the main subject of the mill. The sky provides a mild backdrop in favour of the subject.

Hannah –
An old mill by the water always has stories to tell. I like the mixture of architecture and nature in this piece. The weathered building against the calm anchorage has a peaceful charm.
