Oykel Bridge Art: Highland Landscape Painting
When I came across the old Oykel Bridge, nestled in the heart of Sutherland, I was drawn to its quiet dignity and the way it harmonises with its surroundings. This centuries-old stone bridge, no longer in use since the road was realigned in the 20th century, stands proudly over the River Oykel, offering a window into the past. The bridgeโs weathered stones and graceful arch tell a story of endurance, while the lush greenery and the distant hills frame a scene of serene beauty.
Capturing the Spirit of the Highlands
In this painting, my goal was to capture not just the physical structure of the Oykel Bridge but also the spirit of the Highlands that envelops it. The bridge spans a shallow gorge, with the river flowing gently below, its path winding through rocky outcrops. The vibrant greens of the surrounding trees and the subtle hues of the distant mountains add layers of depth and life to the scene. Every detail, from the texture of the stone to the interplay of light on the water, was carefully considered to bring this timeless landscape to life
A Connection to the Past
For me, the Oykel Bridge is more than just a historical structure; itโs a symbol of the connection between the past and the present. As I painted, I couldnโt help but think of the countless travellers who once crossed this bridge, the stories they might have shared, and the changes the landscape has witnessed over the centuries. This painting is my way of preserving a piece of that history, inviting viewers to step back in time and experience the enduring beauty of the Scottish Highlands
