A familiar corner, quietly observed

This painting captures The Academy at the junction of Schoolhill and Belmont Street in Aberdeen. It’s a view many of us know well: the curved granite frontage, the copper-tinted dome catching the light, and the gentle sweep down Belmont Street with church spires in the distance. I wanted to record that everyday moment when the city feels calm and unhurried.

What I aimed to achieve

I kept the sky light and open to lift the granite and avoid a heavy feel. The building’s curves are central to the composition, so the perspective leads your eye around the corner and down the street. Fine pen work defines cornices, windows and the dome, while soft watercolour washes bring out the granite’s silvery blues and warm browns. Small touches—like the teal door and the sunlit stone on the right—add contrast without overpowering the scene.

Why this Aberdeen view matters

The Academy sits at the heart of Aberdeen city centre and anchors memories of meeting friends, shopping on Schoolhill, and evenings on Belmont Street. I’ve aimed for an honest portrait—recognisable to locals, inviting to visitors—so the painting works both as a keepsake and as a statement piece for anyone who loves Granite City architecture.
