The Callanish Standing Stones – A Prehistoric Wonder

There’s something profoundly moving about standing before the ancient Callanish Stones on the Isle of Lewis.

Older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids, these ancient monoliths have stood for over 5,000 years, forming a site rich in ritual and significance.

The layout of the site consists of a circle of thirteen stones with a central monolith. It is thought to align with lunar cycles and seasonal changes, though the full purpose remains unknown.

The Painting

I painted this piece in watercolour, aiming to express the raw texture and shadow of the weather-worn granite. Each stone tells its own story through scars and grooves, and I’ve worked to bring that to life using earth tones and subtle highlights.

Using a soft, clouded sky as contrast, the stones stand tall and striking, evoking a deep connection to nature and ritual. By keeping the sky bright but uncomplicated, I’ve let the stones dominate the scene—just as they do in reality.

Painted with care and attention to detail, I wanted this piece to reflect both the grandeur and stillness of the scene. The Callanish Stones have stood resolute through thousands of years, and I wanted the composition to reflect that quiet strength.
