Loch Shiel with its beauty, light and history was a must to paint as a sympathetic watercolour. The painting was set along the lower length between Moidart and Sunart on a sunny summer day showing the strength of the colours and without the introduction of habitation
Loch Shiel Watercolour
Some History
Loch Shiel holds a history back to the seventh century dedicated to St Finan. The loch provided a highway route through the mountains from west to east and became a boundary between the areas of Moidart, Ardgour and Sunart. It was on the north end of this loch that Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard at Glenfinnan to start the Jacobite Rising of 1745.
The region is a Special Protection Area for wildlife, bird species, fish and fauna. Remnants of the Great Caledonian Forest are still seen along its 28 kilometre length.
The area has been the location for such films as the Harry Potter series, Highlander, and the Master of Ballantrae.

Arty –
John Gerrie’s watercolour painting of Loch Shiel on a sunny summer day is a stunning and evocative work of art. The painting captures the beauty and tranquility of the loch on a perfect day, with its clear blue waters, lush green hills, and distant mountains.
Gerrie’s use of watercolours is masterful, and he has created a painting that is both light and airy, yet also rich in color and detail. The loch itself is a deep blue, with highlights of turquoise and green. The hills are a patchwork of greens. The distant mountains are a hazy blue, and the clouds above are white and fluffy.
The painting is also well-composed. Gerrie has placed the loch in the center of the painting, with the hills and mountains on either side. This creates a sense of balance and harmony. The painting is also very well-lit, with the sun shining down on the loch and the hills. This creates a sense of warmth and brightness.
Overall, John Gerrie’s watercolour painting of Loch Shiel on a sunny summer day is a beautiful and well-executed work of art. It is a painting that would be a welcome addition to any home.
