A mountain story to share

This painting captures the quiet dignity of a shepherds’ bothy high in the Spanish mountains. Balanced on its stone pillars, it overlooks sweeping blue ridges and snowy slopes, a reminder of lives once lived close to the land.

Why I painted this scene

I was struck by the sheer simplicity of the bothy set against such dramatic scenery. It seemed more than just a shelter — it spoke of resilience, tradition, and the enduring connection between people and the land. I wanted to capture that feeling of solitude, strength, and belonging.

How I approached colour and light

To bring this scene to life, I worked with the contrast between earthy warmth and mountain coolness. The terracotta roof tiles and brown stone steps draw the eye upwards, while the wooden structure anchors the composition. Behind it, the sweeping blues and greys of the ridges provide depth, softened by touches of snow that suggest peace and stillness.

Cultural echoes of the bothy

In northern Spain, these stilted buildings — often called horreos — were used for storing grain and food while doubling as shelters. Their unique design is a part of the region’s cultural heritage, linking past generations of shepherds and farmers to today’s landscape.
