York Minster – West Front
Price range: £10.00 through £40.00
A dramatic, near fisheye view of York Minster’s West Elevation, drawn in ink and finished in transparent watercolour washes.
Painted to capture the cathedral’s soaring height, intricate Gothic carving, and the sense of uplift you feel when you stand at the entrance and look up.
About the painting
York Minster has always stayed with me. I’ve loved architecture for as long as I can remember, and I wanted to finish the year with a subject that felt truly special. The inspiration came from photographs my son took on his Yorkshire holiday, bringing back memories of a visit my wife Alison and I made decades ago. Built over roughly 200 years in cream limestone, the Minster remains a remarkable testament to the skill, patience, and faith of its makers.
For this piece, I chose an exaggerated perspective — like a fisheye lens — so the building appears to rise and reach towards the sky. That sense of breadth and depth, and especially height, is the heart of the composition.
Process & materials
I worked on an A3 sheet of 300gsm NOT high white paper, soaked and stretched before starting. The outline began in B pencil, followed by days of careful reworking as the Gothic stonework and sculptural detail took shape. Once the drawing was resolved, I used 0.05 and 0.10 ink pens to build the carvings, shading, and structure of the façade.
The sky was painted first as a soft backdrop — using gentle brushwork (and, at times, a fingertip) to keep the clouds light and atmospheric. The final colour was built with transparent washes, avoiding heavy paint so the ink drawing remains crisp. I used light and mid ochres, Raw Sienna, Sepia Brown, Payne’s Grey, and occasional Titanium White. The surrounding grass was mixed with Cobalt Blue, yellow, and touches of warm colour to hint at the distant buildings.
